DON'T FORGET THE RECTOR'S BBQ: SUNDAY 1:00 PM AT THE RECTORY.

We Never Seem to Tire of Hamburg ers and Strawberries !

Bright red strawberries, delicious ice cream with sugar and chocolate syrup were not the only goodies served up to 150 guests on the Church and Rectory Grounds at this summer's Paris h Family BBQ and Strawberry Social. Countless hamburg ers and hot dogs served up by Chefs extraordinaire - John Bradley, Sal Ilaqua, Don Maguire and Wilf Hall - were accompanied by a vast choice of salads brought by the guests. The scenery was, as always, to die for and the weather was perfect. Plans for next year are already being hatched!

Fiddlers a Great Hit and So Were We!

When Karen Cluett-Frohloff learned from Clare Baxter, a part-time Hudsonite, that the Cape Breton Fiddlers were to be the featured guests at the 2004 Glengarry Highland Games and had one free evening to offer to the people of Hudson, it was an opportunity Karen couldn't let slip away. She enlisted the help of our Paris h and many of our friends and we were off and running. Based on early responses to our publicity, we hoped to have about 200 - 250 but news traveled and the numbers ballooned to almost 460, including our 60 guests! Quite a number to feed! But feed them we did with help from seven barbecues, ten barbecue cooks, four bar staff, seven parking directors, five runners, and mountains of delicious chicken at a deeply discounted price from IGA Poirier. Even the Quebec Liquor Commission helped out with a tax rebate on the wine.

The Fiddlers played almost non-stop from their arrival at 6:00 PM until shortly after 9:00 PM . To the delight of everyone there, the sound of jigs and reels floated through the air, children and adults alike had a shot at step dancing on the small sheet of plywood on the lawn. Two colourful E-Z up tents from Philip Habib added to the festive appearance of the grounds, and boats drifted lazily by on the river behind. Idyllic is the perfect word to describe the atmosphere, the location and the mood of everyone there.

Most of the Fiddlers had never been off the island of Cape Breton and could barely afford this trip - one that they referred to as their "trip of a lifetime". They were in awe of our town and the wonderful people they met here. And, on top of that, we were able to cover their cost of coming to St. James' and to give them $1,250 to help towards their expenses. The latter turned out to be a Godsend because they had made a miscalculation in the cost of the buses from Nova Scotia to Ontario and our $1,250 contribution covered the shortfall with $200 left over. And an equivalent $1,250 was retained by the Paris h for its general funds.

We extend a huge thank you to all those who helped and to all who attended. It was an evening to be remembered for a long time!

St Mary's Pearly Gates:

They may not be the Pearly Gates, but the fully restored Church Yard Gates at St. Mary's are truly magnificent, thanks to Don Maguire.

Don could not walk past the gates at the entrance to St. Mary's without wondering how they could be restored to their former glory after more than 100 years of abuse by rain, snow, sleet and hail. Many pieces had rotted through and it would have been a matter of only a few more years before the gates would have deteriorated beyond repair.

After many hours of deliberation, he took them to his workshop and spent more than 60 hours replacing about half of the vertical boards and repairing the beautifully arched pieces of wood curving into the centre of each gate and their respective supporting bases. Members of St. Mary's Sewing Circle suggested they be painted burgundy to match the outdoor sign at St. Mary's. Paint them burgundy he did, and was able to re-hang them in their rightful place on the gate posts at the Church Yard; just in time for them to be admired by members of the large Congregation who attended an Outdoor Service at St. Mary's Church on St. Mary's Day, August 15th.

Don is a true craftsman and we are privileged to have him give so much of his time to the Church and its maintenance. May the Gates remain for many years as tribute to his craftsmanship and commitment to the Community!

PARIS H FAMILY: Milestones of recent weeks

Weddings:

Cynthia Bishop and Christopher Fraser were married at St. Thomas Church on August 7 th

with Fr. John officiating.

Deaths:

Ruth Berridge died on July 13 th and her ashes were buried at St. James on August 18 th .

A funeral service will held at St. Mary's on September 25th at 2:00 p.m., for Bill Woods, a long time friend and member of St. Mary's who passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. He and his wife Elizabeth (Betty) were strong supporters of St. Mary's.

Special Anniversary and Birthday Celebrations:

More than 400 folks applauded John & Karen Bradley who were celebrating their 26th Wedding Anniversary on the day the Cape Breton Fiddlers were here. And they broke into a spontaneous rendition of Happy Birthday when we announced Marnie Clarke would be celebrating her 96th Birthday the next day. Very few of us ever have 400 guests to celebrate these occasions, but in these two special cases, the attention was well warranted. Congratulations to the Happy Couple and to the Birthday Girl!

Roger Seguin Back in the Saddle

Roger was welcomed back early this summer after a serious bout with an aggressive infection which originated with an injury to his foot and which laid him up for more than week. Roger made several visits to Hawkesbury General Hospital where ministrations of antibiotics through a shunt got him back on his feet, so to speak. Roger is a pillar of strength in our Paris h. His quiet sense of humour, his supreme diplomacy, his intimate knowledge of all that needs to be done in order to keep our buildings and grounds in tip top shape, and his willingness to do them at St. James', and also at St. Mary's when called upon to do so, is sincerely appreciated. We take this opportunity to wish him continued good health and to say thank you for all that he does for us.

MOVING AWAY, BEST WISHES TO YOU:

We are sad to learn that our long time friends, Jane and Hugh Norsworthy, are leaving us September 1st and heading to Toronto where they will be closer to their family. They have been one of the "mainstay" couples at St. Mary's for many years. Always involved, always ready to help and support, in the wider community as well as in our Paris h.

Hugh served as a warden and a VON driver, Jane as a long time member of the Chancel Guild and the Sewing Circle and both have been strong supporters of the Como Lending library, to name just a fraction of their activities.

They will be sorely missed and their many friends wish them all the best in their new home in the Rosedale district of Toronto .
