August 26th, 2005 (2005-07)
From the Rector
It has been a beautiful warm wonderful summer - a new batch of Rectory Wine underway, and much has happened. We are a warm and active parish, not taking ourselves or the church for granted, but engaged in being responsible deep and effective Anglican Christians where we live. Harvest Thanksgiving services will be on September 18th at both St Mary’s and St James’. Bring a harvest offering for the needy. (Non-perishable food, or money – special envelopes will be available.)
At St Mary’s, Wanda Smith continues the wonderful work she is doing among the children, and Hugh will continue to be a special spirit-sent friend to the older ones among us (and also at St James’). In our special way, we celebrate our Christian faith with joy and energy.
At St James’, you will see that we have new and fresh leaders for our Children’s Church (Sunday School). Elisa, Alex, and Patti Ann wanted to introduce this, and have done so in this issue. Congratulations for taking us on! May God bless your efforts, and the children you serve. Let us continue to pray that at St James we may grow again this year.
Again at St James’, a new beginning for our young families. Starting on September 11, there will be a regularly staffed nursery, with several young people taking on the responsibility of looking after infants whose parents are attending church. Those involved are all qualified for this, and there is back-up with communication to the church. The nursery room is prepared to accommodate as many as wish to come. (It is a good idea for the infant to have a familiar car-bed, or blanket or toy.) Thanks to Kate Ilaqua who is co-coordinating and anchoring this ministry. (Babies are still welcome to stay in church, and even to make all kinds of noise! Noise is family life and that’s what we are an alive family.)
Two September Saturday events: The Consignment Sale on the 17th at St James’ (10am to 2pm) and the Pasta Supper at St Mary’s on the 24th (5:30pm). I marvel how we get so much done so smoothly among us. Event after event, chancel work, music, readers, this Pulse, the list goes on. It’s many people working together, and it’s impressive. I want to congratulate Sandra Holmes, and all the team that made one week in July very special for the 48 children at Day-Camp (and for the rest of us too!).
Please pray for youth-work in our parish. We need the right leader to ignite a program that will engage our young people as they deserve to be, with intelligent, thoughtful, active, and tremendously enjoyable exploration of faith and the fun of being alive in Christ.
As always, I am at 458-5372. I will visit, or bring Communion or a prayer to the shut-in, or the sick; or bless your home; or prepare you for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, a memorial, or simply chat! Please do call.
God bless you.
Fr John
CHILDREN’S CHURCH (SUNDAY SCHOOL):
This year we are blessed with many hands leading Sunday morning children’s worship for the young families of the Parish.
AT ST. MARY’S: Start up September 18th with the Family service at the church.
Welcome back to St. Mary's Sunday School at the hall location every Sunday at 9 a.m. until about 10:15ish, or when parents come to get you from Church. We have a good time together, so there is no rush.
We welcome all children from the ages of four, up to when they feel ready for Confirmation. Let us know if you have a very young child because we do have ready and able youth willing to be there at the hall to mind them while you attend the Church Service. Both Hugh and I cherish the time spent with the children. We have fun with crafts, projects, lessons, games, feedback, stories, and much more. Our first day back will be on the third Sunday of September, Family Service, September the 18th, at the church. Every Sunday, except the third Sunday (FAMILY SERVICE) will be at St. Mary's hall. Please bring your friends. We welcome you with open arms and minds. DRAW THE CIRCLE WIDE. Wanda Smith 458-0481.
AT ST. JAMES: Start up September 11th.
Hugh Marshall will continue working with the pre-confirmation age and three parishioners have come together to take over from Isobel Wright. They are Elisa Proctor, Alex Shandling, and Patti Ann Gannon. Each has written a paragraph to introduce themselves to you;
ELISA PROCTOR:
Hello everyone, (Elisa here!)
Just to let you know that when (Sunday school) "Children's church" (as we are calling it now) restarts, I will be teaching on the first Sundays of the month. For those of you who don't know me that well, I'm a Brit who has been living here since October 2001. I am married to Jarrod and have one son Thomas. We are also in the process of adopting our next child from China. I have been at St James for just over a year and a half now, I am really looking forward to being one of the new Children's church teachers, my first Sunday will be the 2nd of October and we will be learning how "Jesus is our special friend". I hope my Sundays will be fun and informative with story time and crafts.
See you there,
Elisa.
ALEX SHANDLING:
My name is Alexandra Shandling, but everyone calls me Alex. I am newly arrived to Hudson and am really enjoying getting to know my new community. We moved here last Fall from the Plateau area of Montreal, where I lived for the last decade. I was born and raised in the Lawrence Park area of Toronto where I was a member of the St. John's York Mills congregation and choir. I am a stay-at-home Mom, raising my 28 month old daughter, Elizabeth, who was baptized here at St. James. I do translation work from home in my spare time (that's a joke - the spare time bit), when I'm not running after Elizabeth or our two Tabbies: Barnes and Millie. I'm looking forward to teaching the church children this coming year, and thereby getting to know them and their parents.
PATTI ANN GANNON:
I’m mainly known as Miranda, Allan and Rebecca’s mom – and have been attending St. James for a few years now. I was a Sunday School teacher for many years when my gang was very young, and we were attending the Anglican Church in Hawkesbury. I will be leading the 3rd week of the month, as well as working on the family service. Together, Elisa, Alex and I hope to make studying the bible fun and memorable for our youth. I don’t want to give away too much, but Elisa loves to read and do crafts, Alex loves music, and I love a good interactive story or play - - - and we all love to laugh!!!
BEARS FOR DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS:
KNITTING PROJECT: Make a teddy with arms for outreach.
Doctors without borders who treat children in Third World countries are asking for knitted teddies as they have found that children who have a teddy to cuddle get better quicker than those who don’t have one. Each child keeps his/her own teddy to take home, so doctors need a continual supply. This is an ongoing project and there is no time limit. This project was presented to St. Mary’s Sewing Circle and so far we have completed twenty bears! They are very easy to make, taking perhaps four hours – a perfect project for holiday time. Full instructions are available at the back of St. James' and St. Mary's churches or through the sewing circle. The bears can be stuffed with quilt batting or polyester fiber fill. Help # Liz @ 458-5442.
STATUS SO FAR:
Fantastic work ladies! 20 Bears have been completed and sent to Toronto for distribution to various countries where the Physicians give them to their small patients to ease their tension and calm them. To quote a great philosopher “KEEP ‘EM COMIN’”
