STRAWBERRY SOCIAL:
This year's event was a huge success with
more than 170 people taking part. The hamburgers and hot dogs were done to a
"T" (thank you Wilf Hall and John Manning) and the strawberry punch
to die for (thank you Pam Maguire and Bernice Hall). The salads were delicious
thanks to all who brought them. Philip Habib's tents provided just the right
amount of shade over the serving tables and those who served the ice cream and
berries endured the onslaught of those peaked appetites with equanimity.
Special thanks to John and Karen Bradley
for hosting the event, to Graham Campbell and Alan MacLeod who organized set up
and removal of the tables and chairs, to the berry hullers Linda Cobbett,
Glenna Vipond, Mary Vipond, Karen Bradley, Eleanor Lock, Jill Legg and Alan
MacLeod. Extreme thanks to Ed Cowell who ordered in perfect weather for the
event.
ON-GOING RESTORATION and BUILDING AND GROUNDS UPDATE:
The four openings on the steeple, have had their louvers fixed in place. They have
been stripped, cleaned, painted AND, best of all had new screening installed on
them. The screen is raccoon proof and, more important, bat proof !! Only "Bat Man" can get
in there now!
The one beautiful window over the front
entrance is still being repaired. When it was removed it looked like it was in
good shape. Subsequent scraping, stripping and sanding showed it was not; lots
of dry rot plus cracked glass. Window
frames also needed replacing. The repairs are being carried out by a competent
cabinet maker worthy of heritage restoration. We are doing it RIGHT. The work
is being done on this gentleman's spare time and evenings. It will be ready
soon. Watch for its re installation.
Bob's Tree Service came and removed the
dangerous dead branches in and around the cemetery and grounds. There is more
to be done but the ones that created the hazards have been removed. It will
take two more days for him to complete the work. One important item is a
support cable for a beautiful oak tree. Bob is on vacation as this goes to press, but
he will complete the job on his return.
Painting of the garage and Rectory will
start as soon as the weather cooperates.
A leak was discovered in the roof over
the chancel. A contractor came to look
at the roof sections there and he spotted the area needing fixing. The contractor will re-shingle the entire area
over the chancel and altar when he can fit us in. The shingles there are "toast", but
the structure is fine.
One of the trees dedicated last year
looks like it is not going to survive. Not to worry! All five trees are under
warranty and the chap who did the planting will provide us with another oak
this Fall.
