MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR:
I am encouraged by our happy, buzzing, active parish. The numbers are up at
St James, and the Sunday School has had an active season. St James has had a
Nursery at 11 am for the last months, to make it easier for young families to
be at church. St Mary's numbers remain at optimum level. The parish committees
(Pastoral, Youth, Communications, Stewardship, and Liturgical) are all energetic,
and the quality of our life together is high. Rev'd Marsha Mundy is seeing a
growth at Evergreen.
Day-Camp! This year the theme is Signposts and each day (July 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23) a different story from John's Gospel will be told in several different ways including puppets, plays, songs, and games. I am glad to report that Lamb is well, and will be back this year! Last year we filled up in some age groups, so register at the office (458-5897 weekday mornings) with payment as soon as possible! If you wish to help with the leadership or support teams, or with the music, please call Laverne at 458-2361.
During the summer St James & St Mary's combine services. In July 7:45 am at St Mary's, & 9:30 am at St James. In August, it's the other way around - 7:45 at St James, and 9:30 at St Mary's.
Evergreen is at the Cote Church at 10 am (shared with Wyman United)
Special Sundays: St James' Day is Sunday July 25. St Mary's Day is Sunday August 15. Special services will celebrate both these days.
Karen and I wish to invite you to our Rectory Barbecue on August 29th. We hope you can come. It begins at 1 pm.
As always, I am at 458-5372. I will visit, or bring Communion to the shut-in, or prayer for the sick; or bless your home; or prepare you for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage. A review of prayer-life is a good thing, and maybe I can help you in this. Please do call for these or similar things, or simply to chat!
God bless you.
Fr John

A MESSAGE FROM EVERGREEN:
The sun spread out its warm rays as the birds sang and the crickets chirped. The spade cut through without hesitation, slowly turning and weeding some 50 square feet of arable land kindly lent by a parishioner of the Evergreen Anglican Community.
Grow she whispered as she planted to the beans, the squash and the zucchini, the idea of growing food for people through Le Pont-Bridging Food Bank taking root in the ground.
Barefoot and bareheaded in the sun and the wind, as the aroma of baked earth and freshly tilled soil rose up unobtrusive and oh! so soothing, she surveyed her work with a speculative eye. May those seeds that sprout do so and grow but let them all at least have a chance she thought as she walked away.
The Evergreen Anglican Community (a.k.a. St-Evergreen) is a very small church - until it becomes self-sufficient, it is more like a Mission Outpost in St-Lazare. The focus is definitely family - in fact services can be rather noisy at times! - but they do leave one feeling a bit more alive! One advantage of being a Mission Outpost is to be able to explore the needs of the community and suggest solutions that don't automatically have an orthodox approach.
St-Evergreen may be a small congregation, for the most part families with children, but it is certainly dynamic and involved, and in many ways quite practical because everyone is rather busy. We learned to be flexible when we lost our priest, then we lost our location, but now we have both a priest and a place - Please read on for details!
The opportunities for great miracles are only one or two a lifetime, but there
are a thousand opportunities for little miracles every day.
so if you find you are overrun with radishes, or tomatoes, or beans, or anything,
why not get in touch with me (Michelle 450-424-6675) and get it to Le Pont Bridging
- as my mother says, "Let us share the lettuce."
Services are held every Sunday 10 O'clock, at the Cote St-Charles Chapel, 2503 rue St-Charles, St-Lazare (just south of Ultramar gas station by Highway 40). Info. Rev. Marsha Mundy: (514)425-5637
By the way, if the above blurb sounded idealistic to you, try Pastures green and still waters (ref, Psalm 105). My personal take is that some details may have been omitted, such as the fact that I’ll probably wind up feeding a lot more mosquitoes that people doing this planting! (but I still enjoy doing it) M.

ST. JAMES CHURCH WOMEN:
Once again we are relaxing after a most successful Homes Tour. Without our Convenor Gay Campbell's work and all the volunteers effort, this St. James Church fund raising event would not be possible. Thank you to everyone for their tremendous support. The success of the Tour enables us to once again make our annual summer donations to four city groups for needy children and to Camp Chapleau for needy adults, plus financial assistance throughout the year to many more charities. This year we also gave $250 to the Ste. Anne’s Hospital for Veterans. A small thank you from us, for all that they suffered 60 years ago hoping for the return of world peace.
The Women's Executive has agreed to prepare snacks for the children attending the Crosstalk Ministries Day Camp held at St. James. This year Bev Elliott has volunteered to prepare lunches for the Travelling Team workers.
Two garden benches have been purchased and are now on church grounds behind the large hall. This suggestion came from Jean Glew and we were happy to follow through with it. Thank you Roger for assembling the benches and placing them where people using them have a beautiful view of the lake, as thy rest and relax.
The St. James Chancel Guild needs new members, please contact Mollie Munzar at 458-5362 if you can help her and her teams. Volunteering just once every four weeks makes a big difference in sharing this important part of the service preparation. Thank you.
THE BEST MEDICINE: submitted by Frank Royle
Treatment at Hudson Medi-Centre is the best medicine, but Lorne Elliott's Evening of Comedy in aide of the Medi-Centre on May 28th reminded the audience of 230 that laughter plays a very important role in our well being. Everyone laughed till it hurt and cheered enthusiastically when told the evening's effort had been raised $6,000 for the upcoming renovation project at the Hudson Medi-Centre. The evening was hosted at St. James' Church Hall by members of the Parish of Vaudreuil and of Gay Elliott, Aristofit. They all have reason to be proud that their efforts led to such an enjoyable and successful Community Event. And we all are extremely grateful to Lorne Elliott for sharing his gift of laughter as his way of saying Thank you to the Doctors at the Hudson Medi-Centre for all they have done for him.
Summer Service Hymns for the Young and Young at Heart:
Do of you remember "When Mother's of Salem", "Can a Little Child Like Me?", "Jesus Bids Us Shine" and "God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall"? We have found nine such favorites which have not been sung at St. Mary's or St. James' for some time because they are not included in the new Hymn Book. To set matters right, we have chosen a different one of them to be sung at each of the nine Summer Services in July (all 9:30 Services at St. James') and August (all 9:30 Services at St. Mary's). Come on along, and bring the young ones who may never have heard them. Let them join in with you and sing some favorites from your childhood and youth, which we know was not so long ago!
Parish to Host Cape Breton Fiddlers:
We are delighted to be able to offer an evening of entertainment presented by members of the Cape Breton Fiddlers' Association, who are the featured guests at the upcoming 2004 Maxville Highland Games. They have accepted an invitation from our Parish to play for a Ceilidh at St. James' Church in Hudson on Thursday, July 29th, 2004 at 6:00 PM. Ceilidh (kay-lee) is a Gaelic word which means a gathering of people and is a celebration of feast, music and dancing. Everyone is invited to attend.
The evening's program will include live Fiddle Music and Island Dancing and Square Sets involving any guests who would like to take part. Members and friends of the Parish will prepare the barbecued chicken breasts and will serve them with salads and rolls and followed by home made cake. Drinks suitable for the occasion will be available.
The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Association comprises approximately 50 members. Among them is Clare Baxter, of Hudson and Ottawa, who has been instrumental in arranging to have the Fiddlers come to Hudson. Many of the members of the Association have never been off the island of Cape Breton and are extremely excited about this "trip of a lifetime."
Ideally, activities will be on the grounds at the Church, but will be moved indoors if poor weather conditions prevail. This is an event for all ages, so come one, come all, bring your lawn chair and have a great time!
Tickets are $15.00 each, maximum $30.00 per family, and include supper. Net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Cape Breton Fiddlers' Association to help cover the expenses they will incur in taking part in the Maxville Highland Games. Kindly RSVP to Barbara Dodds at the Parish Office at 458-5897.
Parish Outreach:
St. Mary's Church hosted the Greenwood Singers whose program on June 16th included an eclectic selection of folk songs, spirituals, sacred pieces, hits from the 50's and madrigals. To the delight of the Singers, the audience of just under 100 gave them a standing ovation.
The Greenwood Centre will again be open to the public on an scheduled basis throughout the summer. This particular form of community outreach on our part helps Greenwood fund its operations. Also, as on past occasions, Greenwood will share the net revenues from the evening with the Church to help us continue our mission in the Community.
