THE VAUDREUIL PARISH PULSE

November 29th, 2004 (2004-11)

Greetings! I want to make sure that no-one is left out for our celebration this Christmas. If you know of someone who is shut-in or unwell, please let me know (458-5372), I will bring communion or just visit.

May God bless us all as we celebrate together this Christmas. Fr. John

Fr John invites the parish to say this prayer everyday during Advent (from now to Christmas)
“Lord your kingdom come in me today”

PARISH FAMILY: Milestones of recent weeks

Baptisms:

Elizabeth Milne Gratton, daughter of Alexandra and Richard was Baptized at St. James on November 21st.

Deaths:

Herb Donaldson died on November 15th and his Memorial Service was held at St. James on November 20th.

CHICKEN & CHIPS:

Among the successful Family Events held in the Parish since our last edition was Church, Chicken & Chips, a late afternoon Family Service followed by a feast of Chicken and Chips. The 50+ people who attended were sincerely appreciative of the efforts of Lavern Brewster and Isobel Wright who organized this event.

CHRISTMAS BAZAARS BOTH A HUGE SUCCESS:

While the financial results of the St. Mary's and St. James' Bazaars were not available to your editors at press time, the array of goodies and gifts at both events were incredible. The faces on the staff and shoppers alike were a pleasure to behold.

Countless thanks to all those who make, bake, co-ordinate and staff these marathons. Their contribution to Parish Life and the Community at Large is immeasurable and invaluable! The Churches could not survive without them!

ST. JAMES’ CHURCH WOMEN:

The St. James' Church Women held their Fall General Meeting on Thursday, 21 October. At this meeting, the membership approved Christmas Donations totaling $5,200. Groups to benefit are Auberge Madeleine, West Island Women's Shelter, St. Michael's Mission, Old Brewery Mission, Sun Youth, Crosstalk Ministries, LePont Bridging Food Bank, Hudson VON, Pastoral Institute, Tyndale St. Georges, West Island Palliative Care, Primate's World Relief & Development Fund, Mile End Mission and Le Nichoir Bird Sanctuary. Also at the Fall General Meeting, speakers from the CLSC Rene Cassin presented the ABC's of Fraud, a program for seniors and others about scam prevention. Two garden benches were donated by the church women for a "Quiet Garden" overlooking the lake.

ON THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR:

Scenes for the movies ‘The Human Stain’ and ‘Godsend’ were filmed at St. James' Church in March, 2002 and August, 2003. I didn't see either film in the theatre and decided to view each of them on video with the idea
of showing the appropriate scenes at our parish dinner. There are approximately three minutes of film that could be shown and you'd be hard pressed to recognize the church and surroundings unless they were
identified for you.

The Human Stain was the "big" film with big names like Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman but one which got poor reviews and was in and out of the theatres very quickly. It also took a long time to come out on
video. There were two scenes that were shot at St. James' , one inside the church and the other in the cemetery. I knew that they were near the end of the film so I suffered through the implausibility of Hopkins and Kidman being a pair, the nudity, the foul language and the dark story. When we finally got to the funeral service it wasn't our church! They didn't show our newly sanded and verathaned floors, the lovely flowers
placed around the window ledges, nothing - another church completely. Then we moved on to the cemetery scene which lasted all of two minutes. It could have been any cemetery, anywhere.

I then rented Godsend which didn't sound too promising. A science-fiction tale of human cloning starring Robert di Niro as the doctor. No nudity or foul language in this one but a very bizarre story through which I suffered in hopes of seeing our church. The scenes that were shot for this film were children playing on the back lawn, and the front of the church for a dedication after its restoration. This was supposed to be a re-shoot of the end of the film after a focus group indicated it didn't like the original ending. None of these scenes were shown in the final film and they didn't use this story line for the ending. For about thirty seconds you see the church steeple with smoke coming out of it, again it could have been any church.

Unless you're really interested in the stories or keen to see the stars don't bother renting these movies. You certainly won't see St. James' Church. Jean Sasso
