PARISH SUPPER:

A huge ‘Thank You’ to all who helped with the parish supper held last Saturday evening.  For those who attended it was a wonderful time of fellowship and the dinner was, as usual, delicious.  Hats off to everyone!!!!!!

BUILDING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE UPDATE OCTOBER 2008 -               Alan MacLeod

Ongoing projects have been 98 % completed with the painting of the top of the steeple over Thanksgiving weekend. Two small items in the Rectory garage (doors’ maintenance and downspout extension) when completed will see the end of eight, rather large projects started earlier this year.  These projects were: Two fire compliant doors installed; a security system with motion detectors; upgrade of the fire detection and warning system in church and both halls; a fire escape plan with associated diagrams and procedures promulgated and posted (many thanks to Alison Bentley, her children and hubby in this project); Rectory repairs and painting; dead tree limbs removed from the grounds and an oak tree cabled; replacement of a chimney cap and unplanned roof shingling over the chancel area which was necessitated by leaks in the area). The above work does not include the priority and most major work which has been completed, i.e. the refurbishing of the stonework on the tower and facade.

With the exception of one project all work was completed as budgeted and, as a matter of fact, by using local contractors and equipment we were able to save a substantial sum on the tower window, louver overhaul and painting. Extra work around the garage and Rectory veranda foundation was carried out after discovering it would be prudent to do so. St. Mary’s Corp. was consulted on this unplanned expenditure and they were in agreement to do the work at this time.

There are other projects planned for next year.. Priority will be given to initiating phase two of the stone and stained glass window repairs and upgrade. This will depend on grant availability; as yet, we have not been advised if we shall receive any. Hopefully we will have positive news early in 2009.

One item still planned for November, providing weather cooperates and a couple of volunteers come forward, is the removal of the four, large, ugly stumps on the lawn along the drive into the parking lot. As soon as Roger, our man of many skills, has completed the gigantic job of getting the leaves up he will guide us in the grinding and removal of said stumps.  Stay tuned.

CHOIR NEWS:

The choir has been busy preparing for the Christmas season, including our Nine-Lessons and Carols Candle Light Service.  James has picked out a beautiful, challenging repertoire.  Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to contact James Armstrong or Graham Campbell.  The choir rehearses for Christmas and regular services Thursday nights at the church.

The choir also benefited from an all day workshop also arranged by James.  There was a morning session with vocal coach, Joan Fernley where the choir was taught basic fundamentals of singing.  Including the importance proper breathing, posture and diction.  The afternoon consisted of a lesson in proper Anglican chant phrasing by Patrick Wedd.  The day was well appreciated by all who attended.

ON THE BIBLE GROUP:                                                                                                    Elisa Proctor

I purchased my bible about 8 or 9 years ago and have tried to "get into it" several times but sadly to no avail.  It has since sat on my bookshelf.

This year with more time available to me I attended the Prayer and Study group on a Wednesday morning.  I have to admit that I was nervous that first morning, of course there was nothing to be nervous about. What a great  group of people and an abundance of coffee and goodies to boot!

For the first time I could actually understand and enjoy what I was reading.  You know when you have read a great book and it's just like you watched a great movie?  This is what Bible study is like, when I drive home I replay the "visualised" chapter we have just read.

For me the Prayer and Study Group brings the Bible to life!!  If you have the time come drop by and join us, Wednesday mornings at 9.30am at the rectory.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS SINCE I CAME TO CHURCH!                                         Elisa Proctor

If I have my dates correct it was Nov 1998 when I first walked into St Bernards, in Birmingham (England).  From a lost young woman who had thought she had known best all those years to a woman finally listening to what God was telling her.

When I entered St B’s 10 years ago I was surrounded by love and friendship…I was finally able to do what I should have done a while ago and that was to give my life to God though Jesus Christ his Son.

Who knew what he had planned, he has put me on my path and what an amazing time these last few years have been.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD:                                             deadline Sunday November 16th
