A FORMER PARISHIONER WELCOMED HOME: (Proof that if patient enough, we can do it right!)
Here are some extracts from an e-mail received from England, the week before Thanksgiving Sunday.
Dear St. James' Parishioners,
It is with some hesitation that I write this as it seems as though I am being pushy. We lived in Hudson Heights and attended St. James' Church. Apart from a very brief stop in 2000, I have not been back since our family returned to England in 1945.
In what must have been 1944, my mother prepared me for the Harvest Festival Service. (I notice from your website that you had yours last Sunday this year, as did we.) Sure that We Plough the Fields and Scatter would be sung, she taught me the hymn. It was not selected for that Sunday and I was disgusted.
In a letter to you five years ago, I asked that it be one of the hymns on the Sunday when I was planning to attend the Service at St. James' and once again, it was not sung.
I know you sang it only weeks ago at your Harvest Sunday Service, but I am asking it be sung on my return this year. I hope you know I am not really being serious.
With every good wish
Ernie Savage
Well, we repeated the Hymn for Ernie on Thanksgiving Sunday and here is the e-mail he sent to us following his return to England ...
Dear St. James' Parishioners,
It was wonderful for me to be there with you at St. James' last Sunday. My particular reason for writing is say thank you for including We Plough the Fields and Scatter. Its association with my late mother which I explained earlier, and which tied in with one of the themes of Connie's sermon meant that I was quite overcome.
Once again thank you, and please thank all those who made me feel so much at home there.

KNITTING PROJECT – Make a teddy with arms for outreach
Doctors without borders who treat children in Third World countries are asking for knitted teddies as they have found that children who have a teddy to cuddle get better quicker than those who don’t have one. Each child keeps his/her own teddy to take home, so doctors need a continual supply. This is an ongoing project and there is no time limit. Parish of Vaudreuil members: leave completed teddies inside St. Mary’s church entrance.
KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEDDIES
- Use worsted weight yarn such as Patons Canadiana or Phentex ‘Merit”. There should be approximately 20 stitches to 4 inches. Use size 10 (3.5 or 3.75 mm) needles.
- Cast on 10 stitches of the main colour. (The main colour is usually tan, brown or white or any colour you like.) Knit 10 rows. Change to trouser colour and knit 30 rows. Make another leg in the same way.
- Knit across all 20 stitches and work 16 rows. Change to sweater colour and knit 20 rows.
- Change to main colour for head and also change to stocking stitch. Work 5 ½ inches and then change to sweater colour and continue to knit remainder of teddy in reverse order to make the back.
- To make arms and paws for the teddy, stitch down the sides of the head with the appropriate colour yarn. With sweater colour pick up 8 stitches either side of the neck (16 stitches in all) and knit 20 rows. Change to main colour and knit 10 rows for paws.
- Sew up teddy, leaving opening in crotch. Stuff teddy with fibrefill or similar material (please do not use foam rubber as babies may chew it!). Then draw a thread or yarn around the neck. Sew diagonally across the top corners for ears.
- Scarf – cast on 75 stitches. Knit 4 rows. Cast off. Tie the scarf on teddy and sew to back of neck. Sew a happy face! No buttons for eyes please!
